Piece description from the artist
Located at Mummy Cave, this historic cliff dwelling once held the thriving life of the Ancestral Puebloans (formerly called Anasazi) during the 13th and 14th centuries. This perspective reveals additional clusters of rooms and partial walls tucked deeper into the alcove, giving a clearer sense of how the settlement expanded along the natural curve of the canyon wall.
The remaining stone foundations and fragmented rooms suggest a dense, town-like arrangement where families lived, stored food, and carried out daily activities beneath the sheltering rock overhang. Subtle variations in masonry and layout reflect different construction phases, hinting at the evolving needs of the community over time. These weathered yet resilient ruins are located within Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona, continue to tell the story of a vibrant cliffside society that once thrived high above the canyon floor.
