It is a respite to be out in the landscape drawing after painting 8 hours a day out in the barn studio all summer. It's a whole new way of seeing, from the abstract paintings to the landscape. This is just the beginning of drawing season, as the color in the mountain has barely shown up yet. It is very late this year, and I need it!!!!!! For three days the weather was hazy with a dull light. I had to spend a lot of time waiting for an idea to find out what color the day was. I remain struggling with this question when I look at the drawing, but I enjoyed the struggle and know that it is a good drawing anyhow, (because how I felt when I was inside it drawing).
Lorna Ritz studied under the instruction of painter James Gahagan, (a student of Hans Hofmann), who was a very important teacher for her in the 60’s. She received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1971, in both painting and sculpture, (welding steel, and casting in bronze and iron). She welded steel for 25 years, but never stopped painting, and only paints now. It is color and paint that structures the space that then finds the volumetric composition of her painting.
