Moon

Piece description from the artist

This series is inspired by the philosophical idea of Constructivism.
Constructivism is a branch of philosophy which states that all knowledge and meaning is “constructed” in the sense that it arises from human perception and social experience.
The only reality we can know is that which is represented by human thought – specifically our own thoughts.

Each of us actively creates our own reality by analyzing our observations and experiences then arranging the information to fit into our worldview. This body of work illustrates the emotional worlds the characters have constructed for themselves.

These images tell semi-autobiographical stories of love, betrayal, loss, and finding new hope.

Process

It starts with a sketch, then I cut out all of the paper shapes. I set up a camera and build the scene piece by piece, frequently photographing it to inform the process. Once the scene is complete I note the camera angle and the lighting. The finished diorama can fit on a coffee table. I photograph the subjects in studio making sure to match all of the camera settings and lighting. I combine the two images in Photoshop to create the final photograph.

About Patrick Heagney

Atlanta, GA

Patrick Heagney is a photographic artist based in Atlanta, Georgia where he lives with his wife, son, and entirely too many cats. He graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in photography. A magazine and advertising photographer by trade he has pursued a parallel fine arts career as a means to scratch the creative itch that commercial work doesn't always allow him to.
He is interested in unconventional methods and processes that stretch the idea of what fine art photography can be. He hates black and white pictures of trees or landmarks with a certain passion and would almost rather hang a "Live, Laugh, Love" sign in his home than a generic black and white photo. Almost.
