Mission Doorway - San Antonio, Texas

Piece description from the artist

Mission Doorway: San Antonio, Texas

The Missions of San Antonio are architectural treasures that reflect a fusion of Spanish Colonial design and Indigenous craftsmanship. Built in the 1700s using local limestone, adobe, and timber, these structures feature classic elements of Baroque architecture—arched doorways, intricate stone carvings, bell towers, and domed ceilings—adapted to the materials and climate of South Texas. Each mission is uniquely designed, with Mission San José often referred to as the “Queen of the Missions” for its elaborate façade and iconic Rose Window, one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial ornamentation in the United States.

Beyond their religious function, the missions were fortified complexes that included walls, granaries, living quarters, and irrigation systems (acequias), blending form and function in a rugged frontier setting. The architectural layout emphasized both community and spirituality, with churches serving as the centerpiece of daily life. Today, the missions remain remarkably well-preserved, offering visitors a rare opportunity to walk through original 18th-century structures and experience the enduring beauty of one of North America’s most significant architectural legacies.

About Jerred Zegelis

Omaha, NE

Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
