Lupine, Sugar Hill | NH

Piece description from the artist

Lupine offer a spectacular splash of color each year in northern New England, commanding the attention of plein air artists. With the backdrop of the White Mountain’s Franconia Range, I saw an opportunity for compositional intrigue with bold elements – light clearing clouds still enshrouding the deep bluish mountains and then a lot of purples. Thankfully, my preferred painting tool – a palette knife – is uniquely suited to form and then deliver shades of purple to each of many lupine stocks in the field. For me, the lupine are symbols of steadfast reliability, far reaching and exceptional beauty!

About Roy Stever

Easton, NH

Whether en plein air or in the studio, Roy’s paintings are interpretive of composition, color and tone in the style of an impressionist. These elements are accentuated by a distinctive mark, made with knives and various thicknesses of mixed, uncut paint. The works in his portfolio speak to personal experiences. All are painted through observation, from sketches and photos and, in no small part, Roy’s memory.  His simple intention has been to recreate an original moment, pulling the viewer in to what excites the senses most about time in the wild.
