Light Of Day

Light Of Day

Piece description from the artist

  • This painting, "Light Of Day" wins First Place by member vote at the Central Massachusetts Pastel Societies annual meeting and is selected as a "Favorite 15%: in the Boldbrush International Painting Competition April 2019**

I am obsessed with painting light and shadow in waves and "Light of Day" is the 8×8 painting of this obsession. I have been scrolling through thousands of my photo references and zooming in on sections of waves that capture light and shadow in an exquisite way. The time of day and the quality of light are crucial to capturing this translucent glow in a wave as well as the shadow areas. It is this yin and yang that really makes a painting pop. You would think this would be an easy thing to capture but it isn't. Cloudy days won't do it. Rainy days definitely won't do it. High noon doesn't work either. Forget foggy mornings too. If you want to witness the light and shadow, the best way to do it is to head to the beach of a clear, late afternoon day. That's when the magic happens.
