Light Breaks

Piece description from the artist

Deep in the Italian Dolomites lies Pragser Wildsee (or Lago di Braies in Italian). Located in South Tyrol, the water is clear and green and still as glass. The pristine lake is surrounded by jagged cliffs — their limestone faces cutting into low clouds. The forest presses close to the shore, and in autumn, the trees burn yellow against the stone.

On this day the clouds hung heavy, spilling down the mountains like smoke. When the sun broke through this heavy veil, light hit the emerald water and set it with sparkling jewels. The old boathouse stood sturdy on its stilts, it’s red shutters bright against the sylvan tones. Boats drifted quietly on the lake, their scale dwarfed by the mountains.

About Scott Wurzel

Arlington, VA

Currently located in Washington, DC, Scott is a native Floridian photographer specializing in landscape photography. His work explores the interplay of light and dark — rejecting the notion that photography is just “painting with light.” He seeks what resides in the contrast — the liminal spaces of the world.

Scott has shot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, including Iceland and locations throughout the Old World. But some of his most inspiring locations are right at home in America's enchanting National Parks.
