Layers Of Art At Cadillac Ranch

The famous Cadillacs at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas stand buried nose first in the ground, creating one of the most unusual roadside attractions along the historic Route 66 corridor. Installed in 1974, the collection includes vehicles dating from 1949 through 1963, but their original finishes have long since disappeared beneath layers of colorful spray paint and graffiti.

Visitors are encouraged to leave their own mark, and after decades of additions, the paint has become remarkably thick across the vehicles. Bright colors, names, words, symbols, and countless overlapping designs cover nearly every surface, creating an ever changing work of public art.

Seeing these iconic automobiles covered in so much accumulated paint was fascinating. What began as an unusual art installation has become a constantly evolving piece of Texas roadside Americana, with every visitor helping shape what it looks like next.
