Lake Superiors Guiding Light

Piece description from the artist

This vertical photograph captures the historic Whitefish Point Lighthouse on a cloudy, rainy day in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Standing along the treacherous southern shoreline of Lake Superior, this lighthouse is the oldest operating light on the lake and one of its most critical navigational aids. Every vessel entering or leaving Lake Superior must pass this point, which marks a key course change toward the Soo Locks. The area surrounding the lighthouse is infamously known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” due to the exceptionally high number of shipwrecks that have occurred here. Construction of the original lighthouse began in 1847, and it was first lit in 1849, making it one of the earliest lighthouses on Lake Superior. Its design was said to resemble that of the Old Presque Isle Light, and it continues to stand as a symbol of maritime history and safety on one of the most unpredictable of the Great Lakes.
