Piece description from the artist

Grauman's Chinese Theatre (Mann's Chinese Theatre, TCL Chinese Theatre) | 1927 | Hollywood, CA

Grauman's Chinese Theatre was commissioned by Sid Grauman in 1922 after the success of Grauman's Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. He hired the same architectural firm of Meyer & Holler (Hollywood First National Bank, Egyptian Theatre, Culver Studios, Petroleum Building) and construction began on the site of Francis Bushman's mansion in 1926. Sid Grauman owned a 1/3 stake in the Chinese Theatre with the remainder distributed among the remaining investors Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Howard Schenck. The theatre opened with the premiere of Cecil B DeMille's "The King of Kings" on May 18, 1927. Among the theatre's most distinctive features are the concrete blocks set in the forecourt, which bear the signatures, footprints, and handprints of popular motion picture personalities from the 1920s to the present day. In 2013 the theatre was converted to an IMAX theater making it one of the largest movie screens in North America. The technology was further upgraded to IMAX Laser projection in 2015. It now seats 932 people.

About Ashland Thomas

Chicago, IL

Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.

It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.

"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."

A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
