Kanarra Falls Canyon Waterfall

Standing in the middle of the narrow canyon at Kanarra Falls, I watched a beautiful waterfall cascade between a towering sandstone wall and a massive fallen boulder while warm sunlight transformed the canyon into brilliant shades of orange. I captured this long-exposure photograph along the Kanarra Falls Trail in Kanarraville, Utah, where the rushing water creates one of the most unforgettable hikes in the Southwest.

Although many hikers refer to this as the "second waterfall," it was actually the fourth waterfall my husband and I encountered on the trail. Located just beyond the main falls in Spring Creek Canyon, this hidden section feels even more secluded. Adventurous hikers can continue by climbing over the large boulder to reach another waterfall farther upstream.

This photograph was taken during the spring, making the adventure even more memorable. The spring-fed water was only about 36°F, and much of the 4-mile round-trip hike required wading through the icy creek. Even during the heat of summer, the water remains surprisingly cold. I have to admit, I was pretty proud of both my husband and me for making the trek. The freezing water was well worth it to experience breathtaking scenes like this one.
