Kalaloch

Piece description from the artist

Much of the coastline in Olympic National Park is blanketed with smooth stones polished by the tumbling waves. But in places where sand gathers, it’s nearly black. This type of sand tells a geologic story written in fire and ice; born from volcanic upheaval, ground down by glaciers, and unceasingly reshaped by the Pacific’s pull and push.

Coming from the Gulf Coast, beaches like this are a wonder, with stretches that feel truly wild. No condos, no piers. Hardly any footsteps. Just a dramatic sweep of coastline, uninterrupted all the way to the vanishing point. To be able to frame a scene like this, which is increasingly rare, is something I don’t take for granted.

About Scott Wurzel

Arlington, VA

Currently located in Washington, DC, Scott is a native Floridian photographer specializing in landscape photography. His work explores the interplay of light and dark — rejecting the notion that photography is just “painting with light.” He seeks what resides in the contrast — the liminal spaces of the world.

Scott has shot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, including Iceland and locations throughout the Old World. But some of his most inspiring locations are right at home in America's enchanting National Parks.
