Jesus 3

Jesus

Piece description from the artist

The original title of this piece was “Jesus ain’t Christ”. I was raised as a Catholic in an open andnon-judgmental church where I was active in the community as an altar server and eventually an usher. My spiritual beliefs have taken me outside the faith but I still value the lessons I learned through it. Since then I have used religious symbolism in a lot of my work to speak to the divine aspects I believe are inherent in all of us. The original title felt too preachy and even arrogant. Who am I to tell the viewer who Jesus is or is not? In this piece the figure is undefined, open, has movement and energy. Jesus represents all sorts different things and appears in different faiths in different ways. This is one of my favorite pieces.

About Chick Byrne

Boston, MA

Chick is a graduate of Denison University class of 2009. There he received a BFA in studio art and has since maintained a successful and growing studio practice. His work has been seen in several art journals and Interior Design Magazine. In 2015 he was invited to participate in a group show at Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. His work is in private collections around the world.
He works intuitively; easily moving from one medium to another allowing his instinct to guide his choice in color and inform the qualities of his line. His belief in the infinite complexities of the mind and body connection inspires the imagery which is an amalgamation of art theories. The work is figurative in its foundation with an expressionistic approach to application and a surreal vision of the self. The figures see themselves from the point of view that is at once infinitly small and large; the mind and soul exist within and around the body. The viewer is invited, by the bright colors and playful composition, to experience their own concrete experience through his abstract lens.
