Piece description from the artist
The hand-carved granite walls of the C.C. Gideon Tunnel create a unique landmark along the scenic Iron Mountain Road in Custer State Park in Keystone, South Dakota, USA. Located in the beautiful Black Hills, this historic tunnel offers a glimpse of the craftsmanship and engineering that went into creating this iconic roadway during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
Measuring only 13 feet wide and 11 feet tall, the one-lane tunnel is not accessible to all vehicles, adding to the adventure of traveling this scenic route. From this viewpoint, captured where the tunnel connects to a pigtail bridge, you can see the tunnel sign along the roadside and guardrail while the rugged granite landscape surrounds the roadway.
On a mostly cloudy day, the soft light highlights the textures of the carved stone and the natural beauty of this Midwest landscape. This tunnel is one of several memorable stops, with nearby views that include the distant peak of Mount Rushmore as you go through it.
