HOIST HOUSE

Piece description from the artist

Butte, Montana, famously known as the "Richest Hill on Earth," is one of the most well-preserved mining towns in America. These powerful engines that operated at their peak in the 1940's relied heavily on these hoist houses to power mining operations. The massive engines inside these buildings wound and unwound miles of steel cable to lower miners thousands of feet underground and lift tons of copper ore to the surface. Several of these structures, such as the Anselmo and Orphan Girl mines, have been preserved as part of the World Museum of Mining and local heritage sites. I was lucky enough to tour one of these old structures and photograph the engine room, capturing the amazing industrial details.
