Historic Crossings At Berkley Riverfront

Walking along the Missouri riverfront walkway at Berkley Riverfront, I captured this photograph of the Heart Of America Bridge and ASB Railroad Bridge. Located in Kansas City, Missouri, this is an urban oasis where the city meets the river. Light poles line the sidewalk while some fluffy clouds float in the blue sky. A wide grassy area is between the pathway and river. The Armour–Swift–Burlington Bridge (ASB), is also known as the North Kansas City Bridge and the LRC Bridge. It is a vertical-lift bridge and is only one of two of it's kind in the US where automobile traffic drove on the upper level, and rail traffic on the lower level. The nine stone masonry piers were built in 1890 however due to funding issues, the bridge didn't start construction until 1909. It finally opened in 1911. In 1987 the Heart Of America bridge opened and they removed the upper level of the ASB bridge then handed it over to Burlington Northern Railroad, during 1988–1989. In 1996, the remains of the double decker bridge was designated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
