Historic And Modern Navajo Bridges

Standing on the historic Navajo Bridge, I captured this view looking across Marble Canyon toward the modern Navajo Bridge spanning the Colorado River near Page, Arizona. From this perspective, the steel arches of both bridges highlight nearly a century of engineering while blending beautifully with the rugged desert landscape.

Far below, the waters of the Colorado River flow through the tall sandstone walls of Marble Canyon, nearly 467 feet beneath the bridge deck. Warm morning light enhances the rich reds and oranges of the canyon, while a blue sky with scattered clouds completes this classic American Southwest scene.

Located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the original Navajo Bridge opened in 1929 and now serves as a pedestrian walkway, allowing visitors to experience spectacular views that drivers once enjoyed. The adjacent bridge, completed in 1995, continues to carry traffic across one of the few Colorado River crossings for hundreds of miles. Standing here, it was easy to appreciate both the remarkable landscape and the history that connects these two iconic bridges.
