Piece description from the artist
“Hinges of Destiny” portrays a teenager seated in the front passenger seat, gazing out the window at passing highway signs. Each sign becomes more than a marker of direction—it symbolizes the many choices and unknown paths that lie ahead. The stillness of the figure contrasts with the motion of the road, embodying a moment of pause within life’s momentum. The work reflects the threshold of youth, where possibility and uncertainty coexist, and every decision feels like a turning point.
Lyle Everett Rushing was born in Monroe, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina and served honorably in the US Navy. These years had a lasting impact on his mindset and can be seen in each of his pieces.
As an artist, his creative process is based mainly on instinct and passion, combining the calm sensibility of his southern upbringing with the urgency of his urban setting in Los Angeles. In doing so, Lyle attempts to capture emotions and moments in time, and he hopes to encourage conversation as well as quiet contemplation. He enjoys using rudimentary materials, such as graphite, oil sticks and charcoal, and he has recently begun painting with acrylic on wood.
Lyle currently lives and works in Palm Springs, California.
