Head In The Sand

Piece description from the artist

A man in a bowler hat is turned upside down, his hat firmly embedded in the sand of a vast beach, prompting thoughts of existential curiosity. The azure sky dotted with wispy clouds contrasts against the sandy expanse, framing the unexpected pose of this Magritte inspired painting – my 28th featuring the man in the bowler hat in my ongoing tribute to the Belgian master. The intention becomes clear through the deliberate subversion of reality, suggesting a deeper narrative about perspective and self-exploration. Executed with precision, the work incorporates elements of surrealism, provoking viewers to consider the familiar beach setting from an altered vantage point. This thought-provoking creation invites exploration, where clarity meets richness, offering a quiet yet significant meditation on the unexpected twists of human experience.

About Tom Blood

St. Louis, MO

Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
