Piece description from the artist
This photograph captures a Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta), a unique wading bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. Taken at a bird habitat in Orlando, Florida, this striking bird displays its signature warm brown plumage, elongated black bill, and distinctive crest that gives it a hammer-shaped profile.
They inhabit wetlands, marshes, riverbanks, and shallow waters throughout Africa. Known for its remarkable nest-building skills, the species constructs massive dome-shaped nests that can weigh over 100 pounds. Though not native to Florida, Hamerkops are commonly found in zoological and conservation habitats in the United States.
This close-up wildlife portrait beautifully highlights the bird’s textured feathers, elegant stance, and calm demeanor against a soft aquatic background, an excellent example of exotic bird photography captured in Central Florida.
