Piece description from the artist
Guardians of the Threshold are black cats as interdimensional travellers that protect us at night while we sleep. I was asked to live paint at a three day festival in Hawaii near where I live. Sleeping upon the idea of what I would paint in front of others, I woke up in the morning with the idea of painting black cats into the dark areas where the paint was the thickest. Then I looked outside and in my driveway there was a black cat for confirmation! I have not seen a black cat near home since then beacuse of dogs.
Laura McClanahan's artwork is an exploration of natural patterns. Her main thesis is a study of water forms as a metaphor for thought patterns. Through photography and painting, Laura experiments with abstract imagery inspired by nature and her inner understanding of micro and macro patterns. Her images could be celestial or microscopic, this is her understanding of "as above, so below".
Laura is a graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art with an MFA degree in Studio Art. She uses experimental techniques with color darkroom photograms, video and large format printing. Laura continues to expand her explorations via paintings with resin and gemstones sold at Gemstone Gallery in Frenchtown, NJ. Having moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. She teaches painting classes and performs live painting at festivals and events. Her art installations can be found in local stores, Airbnb's and temple spaces island wide. Her paintings have been exhibited in art fairs in Geoje, South Korea and other international art fairs through her gallery representatives in New York City, USA.
