Piece description from the artist
A dramatic moment at the St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse as the sky briefly glows in rich golden-yellow tones while massive, powerful waves crash against the Inner and Outer Lighthouses in St. Joseph, Michigan. Some of the waves surged an estimated 10 to 20 feet high, slamming into the pier with incredible force and filling the air with energy. A dead tree trunk stands along the shoreline. It was mesmerizing to watch and easily became one of the standout highlights of our trip.
The historic St. Joseph lighthouses mark the entrance to the St. Joseph River on Lake Michigan, part of the Great Lakes system. First established in 1832, with the current structures built in 1906 and 1907, the lights served mariners for nearly a century before being decommissioned in 2005. Thanks to a dedicated restoration effort launched in 2014, more than $2 million was raised to fully restore the station, bringing these iconic lighthouses back to life in 2016.
