Piece description from the artist
In 1638, the Dutch West India Company negotiated the right to settle Brooklyn from the Lenape. The first recorded European settler of what is now Greenpoint was Dirck Volckertsen (Batavianized from Holgerssøn), a Norwegian immigrant who in 1645 built a 1 1⁄2-story farmhouse there with the help of two Dutch carpenters.11 It was built in the contemporary Dutch style on Franklin and Calyer.
As a grit and graffiti aficionado, he truly does heart NY. He was classically trained in Russian impressionist, plein-air landscape painting, but has since defected and is a full blooded American impressionist. Today Steve's take on New York City as an ongoing subject has lots of texture and layers, both aesthetically & metaphorically. His mentors may be shaking their heads but lovers of NYC can't get enough.
