Flowing Waters Of Falls Park

I captured this peaceful view over Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as the cascading waterfalls of the Big Sioux River rush over the park's distinctive pink quartzite rock formations. The evening light of the setting sun brings out the rich pink tones in the stone, making them stand out beautifully against the silky white water. Using a long exposure, I captured the flowing water as soft, smooth ribbons, creating contrast with the rugged texture of the ancient quartzite.

On the left side of the scene stands the historic Queen Bee Turbine House alongside the remaining ruins of the once-impressive Queen Bee Mill, while some other buildings in downtown Sioux Falls stand in the background. Together, these historic structures and modern buildings tell the story of a city where natural beauty and history meet.

Located just north of downtown, Falls Park covers more than 128 acres and is one of South Dakota's most visited landmarks. As evening approaches, the warm golden light reflects across the rocks, water, and surrounding buildings, adding even more beauty to this remarkable landscape.

The Queen Bee Mill was constructed between 1879 and 1881 and was once among the region's largest water powered flour mills. After serving several purposes throughout its history, the mill was destroyed by a fire in January 1956, reportedly caused by a lightning strike. The remaining ruins and the preserved turbine house now serve as lasting reminders of Sioux Falls' industrial heritage.

With its spectacular waterfalls, fascinating history, scenic overlooks, walking trails, and picturesque setting, Falls Park is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring South Dakota.
