Piece description from the artist
A peaceful evening at Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, showcases the beauty of the Big Sioux River as it cascades over rugged pink quartzite rock formations. Using a long exposure technique, the rushing water is transformed into smooth, silky ribbons that contrast beautifully with the textured stone and natural ledges below. You can also see the blurred trees from the flowing wind.
To the left of the scene stands the historic Queen Bee Turbine House, while just behind it are the remaining ruins of the once-impressive Queen Bee Mill. These weathered structures add a strong historical presence to the landscape, connecting the natural beauty of the park with the industrial past of Sioux Falls.
The Queen Bee Mill was originally constructed between 1879 and 1881 and was once considered one of the most ambitious water-powered flour mills in the region. After decades of use and change, the mill was destroyed by a lightning-caused fire in January 1956. The damaged structure was later demolished, leaving only the stone ruins that remain today as a reminder of the city's early development and industrial heritage.
Located just north of downtown, Falls Park spans more than 128 acres and is one of South Dakota's most iconic destinations. The Big Sioux River continues to shape the landscape as it flows over the distinctive pink quartzite that defines the area. This photograph highlights the unique combination of natural beauty, flowing water, and preserved history that makes Falls Park a favorite location for photographers, visitors, and history enthusiasts alike.
