Piece description from the artist
A calm evening scene beside the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA captures the quiet strength of this iconic river crossing. Below, the Mississippi River flows higher than normal after recent heavy rains, adding a sense of power to the otherwise peaceful moment. A train passes beneath the bridge, providing a subtle reminder of the region’s constant movement and history.
Completed in 2004, the cable-stayed bridge replaced the original 1929 structure and now carries Highway 74, linking Missouri and Illinois. The bridge is named in honor of Bill Emerson, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 until his death in 1996. It also gained national recognition after appearing in the 2014 film Gone Girl. Captured as a vertical photograph, the composition emphasizes the height of the bridge and the expansive river below.
