Piece description from the artist
A peaceful evening at Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as the cascading waterfalls of the Big Sioux River flow over rugged pink quartzite rock formations. Captured with a long-exposure, this photograph transforms the rushing water into silky ribbons that contrast beautifully against the textured stone. To the left stands the historic Queen Bee Turbine House, while behind it are the remaining ruins of the once-massive Queen Bee Mill, a reminder of the city's industrial past.
Located just north of downtown Sioux Falls, Falls Park spans more than 128 acres and is one of South Dakota's most beloved landmarks. The Big Sioux River tumbles over a series of rocky ledges carved into the distinctive pink quartzite that has become a symbol of the city. As sunset approaches, warm golden and orange hues spread across the scene, reflecting in nearby buildings and adding a beautiful glow to the landscape.
The Queen Bee Mill was originally built between 1879 and 1881 and was once considered one of the most ambitious water-powered flour mills in the region. After serving various purposes over the decades, the mill was destroyed by a devastating fire in January 1956 that was reportedly sparked by a lightning strike. The damaged structure was later demolished, leaving behind the historic ruins that visitors can still explore today. These remnants, along with the turbine house, add a fascinating historical element to the natural beauty of Falls Park.
Known for its scenic waterfalls, historic landmarks, walking trails, observation areas, and rich heritage, it is a must-visit destination for photographers, history enthusiasts, and travelers.
