Piece description from the artist
This vertical documentary photograph captures the impressive scale of Crazy Horse Memorial as it is formed above the Black Hills near Custer, South Dakota. I photographed the monument in May 2026, highlighting the continued progress of this extraordinary granite carving on Thunderhead Mountain.
From this perspective, the detailed face of Crazy Horse draws immediate attention, while the emerging hand reveals the enormous size of the sculpture and the vision behind one of the world's most ambitious mountain carving projects.
Started in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, the memorial remains an active work in progress and serves as a lasting tribute to the Lakota leader and Native American culture. Each visit reveals new details carved into the mountain, making every photograph a unique record of its ongoing transformation.
