Piece description from the artist
I captured this documentary photograph looking down the main entrance road toward the majestic Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This image documents the progress of the world's largest mountain carving as it appeared in May 2026, taking shape on Thunderhead Mountain near Custer.
The face of Crazy Horse now reveals remarkable detail, while the outstretched hand has become increasingly defined, offering a glimpse of the monument's incredible scale and the craftsmanship behind this decades-long project.
Construction began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continues today as a tribute to the Lakota leader and Native American heritage. Surrounded by the pine-covered hills of western South Dakota, the memorial remains one of the Black Hills' most visited landmarks, attracting travelers from around the world who come to witness its ongoing transformation.
