Elephants & Boxcars

Piece description from the artist

The Gulf Stream is a river of warm water (25 to 100 miles wide, depending on where you are), a powerful, fast-flowing, and deep current that brings warm water from the Gulf of Mexico up the eastern coast of the United States and then across the Atlantic to Europe. When storms or any North wind are blowing off the eastern seaboard, "the stream" turns vicious with steep, unforgiving walls of water close together. Sailors sometimes call these waves boxcars and elephants. When trying to navigate through such dangerous conditions, it often seems as if the boat is just bashing into brick walls or being tossed about. This painting is about that. From the safe vantage point of a Florida beach, looking out, they look like lumbering elephants.
