Edge Of A Meteor Impact

An otherworldly view from the rim of Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona, as clouds drift across the high desert sky. Also known as Barringer Crater, this extraordinary geological landmark lies just east of Flagstaff and stands as a powerful reminder of a violent cosmic event.

Measuring approximately 3,900 feet in diameter and plunging nearly 560 feet deep, the crater is encircled by a raised rim that towers about 148 feet above the surrounding plains. Scientists estimate the meteorite impact released energy more than 150 times greater than an atomic bomb, permanently reshaping the Arizona desert nearly thousands of years ago.

Recognized by the Lunar and Planetary Institute, the American Museum of Natural History, and other scientific organizations as the best-preserved meteorite impact crater on Earth, the site was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1967. Its exceptional preservation has also made it a valuable training ground for NASA astronauts. Located along historic Route 66, Meteor Crater blends scientific importance with iconic Southwest scenery, offering a humbling glimpse into Earth’s cosmic history.
