James Scott Memorial Fountain – Belle Isle Park – Detroit | 1925 – Cass Gilbert & Herbert Adams

The James Scott Memorial Fountain is a monument located in Belle Isle Park, in Detroit, Michigan. Designed by architect Cass Gilbert and sculptor Herbert Adams, the fountain was completed in 1925 at a cost of $500,000. The lower Vermont marble bowl has a diameter of 510 ft and the central spray reaches 125 ft. The fountain honors the controversial James Scott, who left $200,000 to the City of Detroit for a fountain in tribute to himself.

The fountain features 109 water outlets in the shape of lions, turtles, Neptune figures and artistic horns and 16 bas-relief panels depict early Detroit life. Basin was originally inlaid with Pewabic tiles surrounding the rim with individual tiles throughout the basin. The tile was destroyed in the early 2000s, and the Conservancy is raising funds to restore the Pewabic tile mosaic.

After undergoing a major restoration about 2005, thieves stole copper components of the fountain, rendering it inoperable. Following a major overhaul, the fountain returned in 2014 to daily service during the summer, complete with a light show at dusk.

About Ashland Thomas

Chicago, IL

Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.

It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.

"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."

A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
