The Fisher Building – New Center – Detroit | 1928, Alfred Kahn

The FIsher Building is considered "Detroit's largest art object"; an Art Deco office building commissioned with the proceeds of selling Fisher Body to General Motors in the early 20th Century. Completing this tower and the neighboring General Motors Building created a business district called New Center, which was the epicenter of America's auto industry.

The tower is 30 floors, reaching a total height of 428ft, and is the 11th tallest building in Detroit. The hipped roof was originally gold leaf, but it was covered, and subsequently destroyed, during World War II for fear that the gold would attract enemy bombers. The stunning 3-story lobby is made up of forty different types of marble and was decorated by Hungarian artist Géza Maróti.

The tower also houses the Fisher Theatre, once an extravagant show palace in the Mayan Revival theme, home to Broadway in Detroit and now operated by Nederlander, and the office tower is home to Detroit Public Schools, Detroit Radio, and Pure Detroit.

You can also catch a glimpse of the Fisher Building in the film Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) which was partially filmed in Michigan.

About Ashland Thomas

Chicago, IL

Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.

It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.

"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."

A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
