Piece description from the artist

National Museum of African American History and Culture | National Mall | Washington, D.C.

In 2016, the NMAAHC opened with a dedication led by President Barack Obama as the largest museum in the world dedicated to African American history. It quickly became one of the most visited museums of the Smithsonian Institute in the nation's capital of Washington, D.C. A total of 10-stories, five above ground and five below, it provides 350,000 sq ft for a collection of around 40,000 items (as of this post), and event and curation space. The building is wrapped in a bronze architectural scrim which represents the design of a crown from the Yoruba culture and architectural elements used in African American design in Charleston, South Carolina and New Orleans, Louisiana. To date, the largest single benefactor has been Oprah Winfrey- who has gifted $21 million to the museum fund.

About Ashland Thomas

Chicago, IL

Ashland grew up in Southeast Virginia surrounded by lush rural landscapes, great protected swamp lands, national & state parks, the Chesapeake Bay, the Eastern Shore, the breathtaking Skyline Drive & Blue Ridge Mountains, and the inlets & oceans of Virginia & North Carolina.

It was this constant variation in natural beauty that first drew his eye to the camera; that, and the constant joy of capturing life's candid moments on film. Although no particular subject is banned from the lens of Ashland's camera, it is landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife, and nature that truly captures his heart.

"There's always more to see, more to learn, more to be wowed about-I just hope you enjoy what I see in the world."

A constant staple on the likes of Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook, Ashland currently resides in Chicago, Illinois, and looks forward to many more years of development, collaboration, creativity, world travel, and art.
