Piece description from the artist
I spend a week every September on an artist retreat on the tiny island of Cuttyhunk or Gosnold, MA. 82 people live there year round, but the summer population swells. This is the only church on the island of no cars.
Susan Medyn is an eco-artist whose practice bridges environmental art and interspecies collaboration. Using natural materials such as linen, rattan, seed heads, and beeswax from her own hives, she creates sculptural works in partnership with honeybees. Her art encourages reflection on our relationship to the environment and the fragile interdependence of all living systems. She has a long history of painting whimsical watercolors and nautical maps but turned to environmental art as a way to bring awareness to our fragile environment. She at times has up to 1,000,000 tiny studio assistants helping her with her sculptures.
Susan has exhibited locally, nationally, as well as internationally in Monaco, Poland, Belgium, Paris and the Loire Valley, France as well as in the USA . She participates in the annual South Coast Artists Open Studio Tours annually.
