Crazy Horse Side Profile

This side profile view shows the construction progress of Crazy Horse Memorial as it appeared in May 2026. Carved into Thunderhead Mountain near Custer, South Dakota, the monument continues to emerge from the granite, revealing more of the sculptor's original vision with each passing year. Thanks to a large donation, they are able to work on completing the project.

From this angle, the facial features of Crazy Horse stand out with remarkable detail, while the outstretched arm and pointing finger begin to take shape, emphasizing the enormous scale of the carving. Viewing the memorial from the side offers a perspective that highlights both the artistry and engineering behind this extraordinary undertaking.

Crazy Horse was a revered Oglala Lakota leader who became a symbol of courage, independence, and dedication to his people. Construction of the memorial began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and remains an ongoing project, honoring Native American history while drawing visitors from around the world to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
