Piece description from the artist
This wider view from the veranda viewing area, gives a perspective of the sheer size of Crazy Horse Memorial as it appeared in May 2026 in the Black Hills landscape. Carved into Thunderhead Mountain near Custer, South Dakota, the monument stands high over pine-covered hills showing the continued progress made on one of the world's largest mountain carving projects. A road can be seen below heading up a hill.
From this overlook, the detailed face of Crazy Horse and the emerging hand along with part of the arm are clearly visible, offering a true sense of the monument's scale. They are also starting on the horses mane. The Veranda provides one of the best places for visitors to admire the craftsmanship, and appreciate the vision..
Crazy Horse was a respected Oglala Lakota war leader remembered for his courage, leadership, and dedication to protecting the traditional way of life of his people. Construction of the memorial began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continues thanks to private donations, preserving Native American heritage while remaining one of the areas most iconic landmarks.
