An enormous growth stony coral reaches toward the surface in the Banda Sea, Indonesia. I decided to turn off my strobes and shot this photo in natural light to convey the beautiful falloff from warm sunlit tones to the darker blue beyond.
For the first four years of his life, before his family decided to make a home in Florida, Montgomery Gilchrist was raised on a sailboat off the coast Central and South America. As an adult, he taught English in Tokyo for two years then subsequently settled in Manhattan. He is a world traveler and maintains a passionate interest in the ways different people live.
