Composition in Color 1977-2024

Piece description from the artist

Work from my "Composition in Color" series are oil paintings on top of digitally printed color slides of older photographs I've come across at my job from the archives of retired art professors. Before printing them large on canvas, I initially alter some of their colors and add brushstroke textures to them digitally. Then I print and stretch them so that I can spread oil paint over them with a palette knife. The paint application responds to the forms and color of the photograph as I build out a new composition with it. It's intuitive and fast-paced, and the transformation is unpredictable yet remains grounded. These photographs were once selected and presented to students to teach them something related to their studies in art. Now I hope they generate a notion of the sublime within all of our own psyches.

About Brandon Jacob Hudson

Commerce, TX

Brandon was raised in rural Northeast Texas where his closest exposure to art was the graffiti on the trains passing by behind his house. He took a scholarship to go to TCU in Fort Worth, TX, where he chose to pursue a BFA in Studio Art after a semester abroad in London. He then received a fellowship to get his MFA in Photography at Savannah College of Art and Design. His thesis show was titled, "Arranging for the Fore, Separating Four and 4", and used photography to explore the way cultures create symbols in search of truth in the world, using different aspects of it to help guide our existence. After SCAD Brandon lived in New York for several years as an artist assistant and photography instructor. He continued working as an artist and studio technician in Los Angeles for 9 years before resettling again in Commerce, Texas outside of Dallas, returning closer to his roots and family. He continues exploring new techniques in photography and drawing and exhibiting his artworks nationally.
