Piece description from the artist
As the day came to a close, dozens of Common Nighthawks filled the evening sky above the Arkansas River near Holly, Colorado, creating an unforgettable golden-hour scene. Watching them twist, glide, and change direction in an instant was almost mesmerizing. Keeping one in focus was challenging enough, let alone trying to photograph an flock.
These unique birds spend much of their time in the air, feeding on flying insects at dawn and dusk. Their long, pointed wings and erratic flight patterns make them easy to recognize, especially as they silhouette against the colorful evening sky.
I captured this photograph as warm sunlight broke through the clouds, casting a golden glow across the Arkansas River and the surrounding farmland. The winding river, green fields, and dramatic cloud formations added depth to the peaceful High Plains landscape, making this one of those unexpected moments that reminded me why I always keep my camera ready.
