Piece description from the artist
A side-front angle view of the historic Chapman School on a crisp autumn afternoon in Pierce City, Missouri, USA. The white wooden siding of the schoolhouse contrasts with the blue partly cloudy sky and the trees in the landscape. Originally named Hazel Hill School, construction was completed in December 1884, and the first classes began in January 1885—making it the first public school in Barry County. This one-room school served students through 8th grade, and before 1910 the schoolyard was divided to separate boys and girls. In 1940, the building was renamed Chapman School, and during the 1960s it was moved a mile and a half from its original site to its present location in Jolly Mill Park. Restored in 1993, it remains a beautifully preserved piece of local history.
