Piece description from the artist
There is something fascinating about standing among the colorful cars at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, where an unusual piece of roadside art has become a symbol of creativity and self-expression. The row of vintage Cadillacs are buried nose first in the ground, leaving their tailfins pointing toward the Texas sky. Each vehicle is covered in layers of spray paint, creating a constantly changing collection of colors, names, messages, and designs.
Bright new paint overlaps faded colors and weathered layers underneath, creating an incredible amount of texture. The longer I looked, the more details I noticed, words, shapes, symbols, and random bursts of color left behind by people who had visited.
Installed in 1974 by the art group Ant Farm, the ten automobiles date from 1949 through 1963 and have become one of the most recognizable attractions along the historic Route 66 corridor. Visitors are encouraged to add their own paint, meaning the artwork is never truly finished and no two visits are exactly alike.
The combination of vintage automobiles, bold colors, Texas history, and the people who continue to add to the artwork creates a scene that feels completely alive. Cadillac Ranch is quirky, unexpected, and definitely an experience you don't want to miss out on if you're in the area.
