Piece description from the artist
A closer view of the alcoves in Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona shows the intricate textures and natural formations carved into the sandstone walls. Seen from near Navajo Fortress Rock and Black Rock Canyon, this tighter perspective highlights the depth and shape of each sheltered opening.
Bathed in warm afternoon light, the golden tones bring out the rich layers and weathered details of the rock. These alcoves, formed over centuries, may have provided natural shelter for the Ancestral Puebloans during the 12th and 13th centuries, adding a deeper sense of history to this striking and intimate canyon view.
