Piece description from the artist

The artwork is part of a series, titled Unreal Reality, in which an original photograph, shot on location in various international cities, is digitally blended with the elements taken from the edges of the frame to create an expanded cityscape surrounding the subject. The outward growth of the frame is accomplished by utilizing the Fibonacci based sequence of numbers to produce aesthetically pleasing patterns. The project is a subjective approach to photography favoring perception over seeing. It is meant to re-invent the viewer’s relationship with the reality of the outside world around him/her. This deviation from the norm of realism are emphasized by these large-scale artworks, depicting urban landscapes containing spaces with vast perspectives where buildings soar above the human scale and architectural elements unique to each city produce one of a kind geometric pattern.

About Shane Taremi

Cambridge, MA

Shane Taremi is an Iranian-born photographer and digital artist based in Boston. He creates surreal cityscapes from around the world which re-examines the traditional, supporting role of a city backdrop to a defined subject in an urban portraiture. His scientific training, as a former Ph.D. biochemist has brought him the discipline to the way he approaches photography and has enabled him to develop his own technique and unique voice, as showcased in his Fibonacci-based cityscape series titled Unreal Reality. In this series, an original photograph, shot on location in various international cities, is digitally blended with the elements taken from the edges of the frame to create an expanded cityscape surrounding the subject. The outward growth of the frame is accomplished by utilizing the Fibonacci based sequence of numbers to produce aesthetically pleasing patterns, all originating from the edges of the frame.
When he is not consumed with creating these surreal cityscapes, as a co-founder, curator and resident artist at Ten-Essex Gallery and similar vacant spaces in Cambridge, he thrives on working with other local artists to create spaces in the community that is free to any participating artists for showcasing their work and having an opportunity to interact with art lovers, locals, and visitors alike. Shane considers himself blessed to be able to successfully transition from a 30 year-long scientific and rewarding career in big Pharma to pursuit the life of a creative artist.
