Cadillac Ranch Along Route 66

Looking down the row of vintage Cadillacs at Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. Each car is buried nose-first in the ground, creating a unique perspective as the colorful vehicles seem to march across the open landscape.

The closer you look, the more personality each automobile reveals. Thick layers of spray paint cover the original finishes, with bright colors, handwritten messages, symbols, and abstract designs overlapping one another. Some areas show fresh paint, while older layers peek through with cracked and weathered textures, telling the story of countless visitors who have added their own creative touch.

The installation was created in 1974 by the art group Ant Farm and features ten Cadillacs dating from 1949 to 1963. Positioned along the historic Route 66 corridor, the cars have become an unmistakable piece of Texas roadside Americana and an ever-changing work of public art.
