Bones

Piece description from the artist

Two elements define Ruby Beach: the clutter of driftwood and the silhouette of Abbey Island rising beyond the tide. Both are evidence of something ancient. The trees were once towering evergreens before falling from coastal cliffs as storms and tides ate away at land. Now they lie bleached and smoothed, their bark stripped away. But the enormous size of some mean they grew for more than a century before collapsing into the Pacific.

Abbey island is even more ancient. It rose from the sea floor millennia ago, formed by volcanic upheaval, lifting it up from the sea floor. Together, the island and the driftwood hint at the power of time and elemental forces.

About Scott Wurzel

Arlington, VA

Currently located in Washington, DC, Scott is a native Floridian photographer specializing in landscape photography. His work explores the interplay of light and dark — rejecting the notion that photography is just “painting with light.” He seeks what resides in the contrast — the liminal spaces of the world.

Scott has shot in some of the most beautiful locations in the world, including Iceland and locations throughout the Old World. But some of his most inspiring locations are right at home in America's enchanting National Parks.
