This stunning early morning photograph captures the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, United States just before sunrise during the tranquil blue hour. Taken from below the bridge on a clear spring morning, the Mississippi River flows high and wide due to seasonal flooding from heavy rains. Spanning the river between Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and East Cape Girardeau, Illinois, this iconic cable-stayed bridge carries U.S. Highway 74 across the state line.
Completed in 2004, the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge replaced the historic 1929 Cape Girardeau Bridge. It was named in honor of Missouri Congressman Bill Emerson, who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 until his passing in 1996.
