Bison Time To Get Up

After an energetic back roll on the prairie, this massive bull bison begins the process of getting back to his feet in Badlands National Park near Wall, South Dakota. Dust still clings to his thick coat as he pushes himself up from the ground, revealing the incredible strength and size of one of North America's most iconic mammals.

Moments earlier, the buffalo had been rolling and kicking in the dirt, sending clouds of dust into the air. Now, with a determined look and powerful posture, he transitions from playfully bathing in the prairie soil to standing once again among the grasslands of the Badlands. The scene offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural behaviors of bison, which often roll in dirt to help remove loose fur, discourage insects, and maintain their coats.

Captured in the rugged landscape of western South Dakota, this photograph highlights both the raw power and character of a wild American bison.
