Piece description from the artist
Sometimes the best wildlife photographs are the ones you never expect. As this American bison mother paused to scratch an itch on her face with her hind leg, her curious baby bull calf casually wandered in front of her with its tongue partly sticking out, creating a moment that was both adorable and fun.
I photographed this bison pair while exploring the rolling prairie of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The blurred backdrop of the park's rugged rock formations keeps the focus on the mother and calf while still showcasing the unique landscape they call home.
Spring is one of my favorite times to visit Badlands National Park because it's common to see young bison calves following closely behind their mothers. Watching them explore the prairie, full of curiosity and personality, is a reminder that even North America's largest land mammals have playful moments that make them unforgettable.
