Below Mount Rushmore

I captured this photograph standing below one of America's most recognizable landmarks, Mount Rushmore National Memorial near Keystone, South Dakota. The towering granite faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln emerge from the mountainside, creating a scene that blends history, patriotism, and the natural beauty of the Black Hills.

The four presidents were chosen to represent key chapters in the story of the United States: the nation's founding, growth, development, and preservation. Their likenesses, carved into the granite cliffs, have become an enduring symbol of American history and one of the country's most visited national memorials.

I captured this in 2026 during the year of the 250th anniversary of American independence. The morning light illuminated the faces while the surrounding pine trees provided a natural frame, adding depth and character to this classic South Dakota landscape.

Located in the heart of the Black Hills, This carved Thunderbird Mountain continues to draw visitors from around the world who come to admire its craftsmanship, historical significance, and spectacular setting among the forests and granite peaks of western South Dakota.
